Chaplain (Col) Alvin M. "Sonny" Moore was appointed District 3 Commissioner in December 2022 by Governor Ivey to fulfill the remainder of the term of Commissioner Josh Carnley. Commissioner Moore served as a civilian pastor for 16 years before coming on active duty in 1982. He also served in the Mississippi National Guard and Army Reserves for 8 years. He is a graduate of Northwest Mississippi Junior College, Delta State College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. He served as Command Chaplain at US Army Forces Command at Fort McPherson, GA. He also served as US Army Aviation Center Chaplain at Fort Rucker, AL. He retired in June 2008 after serving 34 years in uniform. In January 2018, he was made the Honorary Chaplain for the US Army Aviation Branch.
Since his military retirement, he served as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church for 5 1/2 years. He retired from the pastorate in 2015 and now serves as Director of Community Relations for M1 Support Services. He is active in community affairs, serving on the Board of Trustees for the Wiregrass United Way. He is also a member of the Wiregrass Forum Organization. He is a member of the Military Officers Association of America and Army Aviation Association of America.
Chaplain Moore was married for almost 40 years to his 4th grade sweetheart, Martha, who passed away in 2005. They have three children and seven grandchildren. In 2011, he married Dr. Celia Stump of Enterprise.
