Landfill Gas

The Coffee County Landfill began accepting waste in October 1993 and as of 2007 has 1.7 million tons of waste in place which covers a footprint of 50 acres at an average depth of 60 feet. With an annual acceptance rate of approximately 150,000 tons and a disposal capacity of 14,680,000 tons remaining, the life expectancy of the landfill is over 100 years.

Currently, there is not an active gas collection system in place at the Coffee County Landfill and there is not a requirement for one to be installed until 2040. Landfill gas is flared through passive gas flares attached to leachate cleanout lines installed during the construction of each cell.

Coffee County is currently exploring options for the installation of an active gas collection system at the Coffee County Landfill.
